Microsoft Invite Tips Oct. 29 Windows Phone 8 Launch

HTC Windows Phone 8X

Microsoft today sent out a "save the date" for Oct. 29, when it will formally unveil its Windows Phone 8 mobile operating system.

The event, set to take place at 10 a.m. Pacific in San Francisco, will likely include more details about where consumers can get their hands on phones with Redmond's next-gen mobile OS.

The most high-profile Windows Phone 8 devices will likely be Nokia's Lumia 920 and 820, which AT&T announced today will be available exclusively on its network. Nokia and AT&T, however, have not yet announced a precise lauch date or price, so we'll probably get more details on that on Oct. 29. Until then, check out PCMag's hands on with both phones and the slideshow below.

HTC, meanwhile, showed off its Windows Phone 8X (above) and the Windows Phone 8S last month. Both devices will be available in November from AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon, but other details have not yet been released. HTC, however, has promised to "go big" on Windows Phone 8.

At IFA, Samsung also took the wraps off its Windows Phone 8 handset, the Ativ S. The smartphone was not on hand at the trade show, but perhaps we'll get a glimpse later this month.

Microsoft was actually very invite-happy today. The software giant also invited the press to a New York event on Oct. 26 for the formal launch of its Windows 8 operating system. According to The Verge, the company's Windows 8-based Surface tablet will launch on Oct. 25 at midnight, but a Microsoft spokeswoman would only say that the company does not comment on rumors or speculation.

PCMag will be at the Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 events, so stay tuned for all the details.
