Huff pips Muller in second practice

Rob Huff edged out Chevrolet team-mate Yvan Muller in the final practice session at Oschersleben, producing a last-gasp effort to snatch top spot in the final minute of the session. Having led for much of the session, Muller was spurred into a late attack of his own as a superb lap from Polestar Racing's Robert Dahlgren put the Volvo C30 at the head of the field, 0.076 seconds clear of Muller

32 Ford 5 Window WIP Quick Build (for me)

After being derailed from my building I decided to do a few quick builds to get back into things. My kids got me a few of the Revell 32 kits for Christmas so I decided that a relatively simple project might get me going again. The idea was to take the 5 window kit and build it pretty much out of the box. I dropped the front end down a bit more and other than some minor detail painting and plug wires it is pretty much going to be box "stock".

Started out slow and painted a few parts. The car will be dark blue with yellow steelies and tan interior.

Added a black wash to the wheels and caps to help bring out the details and the "windows"

Mock up pic shows the frontend brought down as much as posible with the kits tires.

First shot at using Alcad on this one. My cheep airbrush needs to be replaced, but worked alright for this build.

2012 Ford Explorer EcoBoost Rated for 28 MPG Highway, Will Be Front-Drive Only

Ford has announced that the 2012 Explorer with the optional EcoBoost four-cylinder engine has received an EPA rating of 20 city mpg/28 highway. This is a not-insubstantial improvement from the 17/25 rating for the front-wheel-drive Explorer packing the standard 3.5-liter V-6 engine. Still, the EcoBoost Explorer may be a tough sell. Mercedes C63 AMG Black Series with Track/Aero Package

The new Mercedes C63 AMG Black Series Coupe has just recently been revealed and there are already first images and details on the model equipped with the AMG Track Package and AMG Aerodynamics package - two packages that will add even more sportiness to the car.

The AMG Track Package includes sports tires, size 255/35 R 19 for the front and 285/30 R 19, developed exclusively for this model, active rear-axle transmission cooling, and a radiator located in the rear apron that allows the airflow to pass through it effectively. The Aerodynamics package includes the front carbon fiber canards (aka "flics") which are made of genuine carbon fiber and located on the front apron. This package also includes a functionally tuned front splitter made of genuine carbon fiber and a fixed carbon-fiber rear aerofoil with an adjustable blade. Both components not only increase the lift at the front and rear axle, they also optimize the vehicle?s aerodynamic balance.

The rest remains unchanged. The 6.3 liter V8 engine will still deliver a total of 510 HP and a peak torque of 457 lbs-ft, allowing the vehicle a 0 to 60 mph sprint time of 4.2 seconds.

Mercedes C63 AMG Black Series with Track/Aero Package originally appeared on topspeed.com on Friday, 29 July 2011 14:00 EST.

Hamilton decision-making under the microscope

Lewis Hamilton has come in for criticism © Getty Images
Lewis Hamilton?s decision-making ability has come into question after he crashed into the side of Felipe Massa on lap one, causing his early retirement from the Italian Grand Prix. This incident has raised questions about his temperament and ability to bounce back. Kevin Garside of the Daily Telegraph questions how much we should really be expecting from Hamilton. ?Perhaps this is how it must be with Hamilton, an instinctive racer compelled to chase the impossible through gaps that don?t exist. He took the best part of an hour to compose himself before walking out into the sun to face the cameras. This was Hamilton?s third DNF of the season but the first of his own making. Occasions like this are perhaps reminders to us not to expect too much. ?On the days when Hamilton?s insane alliance of guts, skill and derring-do appear capable of delivering the world it is easy to forget he is only 25, an age when it is all too common for boys to believe themselves men.? Byron Young of the Mirror also pulls no punches about Hamilton?s performance and was heavily critical of the manoeuvre which meant he left the weekend pointless. ?To say that his dive down the outside at Della Roggia chicane was optimistic would be generous. Mystifying, definitely, with so much at stake. So often Hamilton has made them stick but yesterday the outcome was all too predictable.?

Renault open-minded on exhausts

Renault says that it will not be afraid to ditch the forward-facing exhaust concept that it pioneered if a new rear design proves to be better. Although the team's R31 was built around the idea of forward-facing exists to make the most of blowing air under the car, the team suspects that there could be advantages from a Red Bull Racing-style blown diffuser instead. A test of an initial design at Duxford last month provided some promising feedback on the design and, as AUTOSPORT revealed, the team is experimenting with rearward facing exhausts in practice at the Nurburgring after fitting it to Nick Heidfeld's car.

Pirelli predicts last-minute pitstops

Formula 1 fans could be treated to a German Grand Prix that is decided in the closing stages, with Pirelli believing that drivers could opt to make last-minute changes to the medium compound tyres. With current data suggesting that there is a 1.5 seconds laptime difference between the soft and the medium compound tyres, the strategy prediction is pointing towards a less than usual approach to the races. Pirelli's director of motorsport Paul Hembery suspects that if it stays dry, then drivers could try and get through as much of the race as possible with two sets of soft tyres - before stopping as late as possible for the slower medium tyre.

Official: Discovery to launch Velocity TV automotive network this year [w/video]

Velocity NetworkDiscovery is launching a new cable network to cater specifically toward well-moneyed male auto enthusiasts. According to the network, Velocity is set to serve up around 400 hours of programming that includes a mix of new shows as well as reruns of old favorites. Some of those will be pulled from HD Theater, including Inside West Coast Customs, Mecum Auto Auctions, Cafe Racer and Chasing Classic Cars. So far, it's unclear exactly what new shows will surface on the fledgling network, but given that the channel is aimed toward luring in the "upscale men's market," America may be safe from more NASCAR replays - at least in the beginning.

Instead, word on the web indicates that Velocity will spend at least some of its air time covering the Mille Miglia North America tribute in the U.S. this October. The three-day event will spend its time frolicking around California, and Velocity will feature a 1-hour special on the race. Hit the jump to check out an introductory video on the rest of Velocity's programming as well as a press release on the network.

1965 Pontiac GTO WIP

I have this older kit and wanted to build a 65 Pontiac GTO because I like the color that is described as Iris Mist on the internet but the MCW color seems to be Evening Orchid metallic.  In any event it appears that thisa kit can be built as either a convertible with a down top or a hardtop. Of course, the instructions are no help so I was wondering if this is correct. The top doesn't look like a covertible top.  I checked the Model round-up site and only kits that are available are AMT kits and I think they are all just different versions or re-pops of this same kit and indicate that these kits can be built as a hardtop or convertible. Is anything else available in a hardtop for 1965?  Thanks for looking! Any help would be appreciated! Cool

Allmendinger gets new crew chief

Greg Erwin, former crew chief for Roush Fenway Racing's Greg Biffle, will resume that role alongside Richard Petty's AJ Allmendinger with immediate effect. Last week Erwin was replaced at Roush by Matt Puccia as Biffle's crew chief, as the leading Ford outfit attempts placing all its four drivers in contention for a Chase birth. Allmendinger currently ranks tied 16th in the point standings and a victory in the following seven races could potentially put him in position to take a wild-card entry into the playoff.

Michael Waltrip Racing has filed a lawsuit against Mike Coughlan and the Williams team over the former's hiring as chief engineer, claiming breach of contract and interference from the Formula 1 team. Court documents of the suit filed in North Carolina seen by AUTOSPORT claim Coughlan, who worked at Michael Waltrip Racing as director of vehicle design from October 2010, had a contract with the NASCAR outfit until November 30 2012 but informed the team he was terminating the deal in April, allegedly breaching his contract.

Pirelli to try new soft in Germany

Pirelli wil try out a new version of its soft tyre in Friday practice at the German Grand Prix. The tyre firm's motorsport boss Paul Hembery said the revised compound was part of efforts to make the Pirelli range slightly more durable to ensure the number of pitstops in races did not become excessive. "It's not a big change from the current specification, but it is designed to fit in line with our latest versions of the P Zero Silver hard tyre and P Zero White medium, both of which are a little harder than their original specification in order to reduce degradation," he said.

Proof That There's Still Life Left In The SUV Game

2012 Mercedes-Benz ML350 BlueTec 4Matic

It's getting harder and harder to hate SUVs these days. As manufacturers continue to walk down their own personal Green Mile toward stiffer CAFE standards, engineers have been working double-time to come up with creative ways to increase fuel economy without putting drivability or power on the sacrificial altar. As a result, the once-lumbering sport utilities of old have matured into smooth-riding, even-keeled unibody machines with the manners of significantly smaller models. Few vehicles embody that change quite as poignantly as the 2012 Mercedes-Benz ML350 BlueTec.

The M-Class has entered into its third generation of production, and the new model now comes equipped with more power and efficiency while maintaining last year's MSRP. Designers have also taken the time to iron some of the awkward out of the SUV's design with an improved front fascia and other tweaks, and there's more standard technology onboard than ever before. Continue reading to find out why the 2012 ML350 BlueTec 4Matic is the best reason we've seen yet to quit worrying and love the SUV.

2012 Chrysler 300 SRT8 / 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 ? First Drive Review

Two reminders that great things can still come in big packages. If we made a list of unforgettable cars of the previous decade, the first-generation Chrysler 300 SRT8 and Dodge Charger SRT8 would be on it. They were nutso full-sizers with 425-hp, 6.1-liter Hemis; aggressive looks; and chest-thumping exhausts. Those qualities earned them a pass [...]
