Shotwell photo manager now supports Tumblr blogs

Shotwell logo With the release of version 0.13.0 of Shotwell, the developers at the Yorba Foundation have added a new publishing option to their open source photo manager for the GNOME desktop, whilst also introducing new security improvements. With this latest version of Shotwell, users can now publish images to the Tumblr blogging service thanks to a new connector which they can enable by selecting the Tumblr option under Preferences > Plugins.

In the new version, Shotwell uses OAuth for a more secure connection when users connect to Picasa Web Albums. A new option to remove EXIF data from photos before publishing them, for example, to social networking sites, has also been added; this means that users can automatically remove all or some private EXIF details such as location information or the type of camera the image was captured with. Other changes include improvements to the straightening tool when adjusting the angle of photos, better thumbnail generation and fixes for date handling.

Further information about the update can be found in a post on the Yorba blog and in the provided documentation. Licensed under the LGPL v2.1, Shotwell 0.13.0 is available to install as a PPA for Ubuntu, or as source code for self-compilation on Fedora 17 and other Linux distributions. As noted by the project's web site, version 0.13.0 will be the default photo manager in the upcoming Ubuntu 12.10 "Quantal Quetzal" and Fedora 18 "Spherical Cow" releases.
